Discovering Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia and Thailand

It's Just Like Home

Introduction This is a journal of Golden Age travelling in discovering New Zealand and Australia. A gap celebration holiday for the young elderly to mark retirement from the constraint of work and social expectations. A reflective trip to share with ageing dissenters.
Hong Kong Once the old colonial retreat and centre of the opium trade. Now the epitome of rapacious capitalism. It has become a vibrant and sparkling blend of cultures.
Auckland The City of Sails as the gateway to the tramp of New Zealand. A springboard for the exploration of The Bay of Islands and 90 Mile Beach.
Rotarua The spiritual hotbed of turbulent streams and bubbling pools. The sacred place where the forces of nature are constantly on show.
Napier The art deco paradise for aficionados rebuilt in contemporary design in the 1930’s following the catastrophic earthquake.
Picton Nominally the transit town for access to the South Island. Set in the Alpine country along the Marlborough Sounds. Its dramatic and awesome landscape deserves its own appreciation.
Marlborough Sounds A week’s ramble hugging the Sounds on the famous Queen Charlotte Track. A honeymoon delayed for 40 years in enchanting remote resorts spread along the Sounds.
Kaikoura The beginning of our fortnight’s campervan expedition. Kaikoura where the renowned Whale Watch tours guarantee sightings of frolicking sperm whales and dolphins.
Milford Sound The eighth wonder of the world where you will be captured by its majestic scenery and mystique.
Sydney The final lap tracing the genes in the land of my forbears. Joining my Aussie cousins in their festive season and scaling the heights of Sydney Bridge.
Manly It is part of the compulsory script to witness the buzzing, energetic beach life in Manly and Bondi Beach.
Blue Mountains A divine place for the Aborigines. A Jurassic forest park where you can retreat from the urban frenzy. There are breathtaking views of a gigantic range inhaling the odour of eucalyptus.
Northern Beaches In out final brush with the former colony, John introduces us to the more sedate Sydney beaches of Balmoral, Coogee and Palm Beach. On our way home there is a Bangkok full of eastern promise but pollution and congestion inhibit any attachment.
Thailand Land of shrines to the Buddha, royalty and internal combustion.
